Margrit Mondavi home in Napa Valley sells for $4.6M

The property owned by the estate of the late Margrit Mondavi sold March 24 for $4.6 million.

The property was purchased by second-home buyers from San Francisco, according to Hillary Ryan, a Pacific Union agent who represented the buyers.

Acquired by Mondavi in 2009, the property is located on 9.9 acres in the Coombsville winegrowing area east of Napa. It has panoramic views as far north as Mt. St. Helena. The 4,064-square-foot single-story residence has three bedrooms, 3.5 baths, an office, expansive decks and an infinity-edge pool.

The approach to the property is along a charming country lane, past stacked rock walls, a gated entry, and an expansive motor court with circular driveway. A wide path to the home is flanked by ancient olive trees, leading to an impressive entry door, built around an inlayed antique panel from the Mondavi’s residence at Wappo Hill.

There is also a lower level, one-bedroom guest house on the property.

The 10-acre estate, located less than 10 minutes from Napa’s riverfront, has outdoor entertaining venues and more than four acres which may offer an opportunity for high-end vineyard development.

“The Ruin” as Mondavi is said to have “lovingly” named it, was transformed by her team, Howard Backen and Grassi & Associates. Mondavi, wife of wine industry icon Robert Mondavi, died Sept. 2 at age 91.

The buyers were drawn to the property’s history, and the value of the Howard Backen renovation, Ryan said.

Cyd Greer, broker with Coldwell Banker Brokers of the Valley, represented the seller in the transaction.

“The Napa Valley real estate market fundamentals continue to be strong in both the residential and land segments,” Greer said. “There is significant demand among both second-home and primary-residence buyers, particularly for well designed, well located, turnkey properties.”
